Ah, the good old days...when we all lived in a hotel, ordered room service and slept through the night. Just kidding except for the sleeping through the night part. While at the beginning everyone was sleeping well, now the older boys are having a terrible time sleeping through the night without waking several times. We are trying to get them to stay in their own room, or more specifically out of our bed because sleep is lost that way too. Any thoughts out there?

Hi Melissa,
I don't know if this will help you with getting the boys to sleep in their room or not. Our 4 year old (bio) went through a phase when he didn't want to sleep in his room and wanted to sleep with us. Night terrors and constantly waking up and waking us up to make sure we were here and everything was alright. We waited for a long weekend when daddy was off on Monday. We made it up like a sleepover in his room with daddy. Made sure he had a good nightlight and a CD player in his room with his usual comforting music. The first night they both slept on the floor side by side in sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. Had flashlights, read books, giggled, etc. The second night my son slep on the mattress in his bed with dad sleeping on the floor next to him, less giggling and no flashlight, but holding hands and falling asleep. Next night dad sat in chair and did not sleep but stayed in the room until asleep. He did this for the next four or five nights and then he started to go to sleep faster and the stay in the chair got less and less.
Hi Melissa! No help here. B and L still sleep in our room. They start out in their beds but sneak in, usually before 12:00. At that point, I'm so tired, I just don't care anymore :) -MM
Hi Melissa
Something that always helps with kids is sticking to a routine. These are just thoughts, you can create a routine that works for you and your family.
After supper, play some games or activities that gets them moving and hopefully, tired: running around, chasing each other, if it's not too dark, playing ball outside, whatever gets them active. When that's over, a warm bath, not shower. Then, getting to bed in their rooms, playing classical music in the background, not loud, and reading them a couple of books.
When they wake up in the middle of the night, repeat the routine: get in bed, play the same music, grab a book.
I know the idea demands a lot on the parents, and since you're new parents, you're bound to be tired by now. But if you stick to the same routine over and over and over again... it will sink in. Kids are sponges, and the key to learned behaviours is repetition.
I hope that helped...
Good Luck!!!
Laurie
