Adoption Poems

Here are a couple of short poems given to me by my friend Melissa; she is a mother by birth, fostering and adoption and is also "waiting" right now for a new family member to come "home." Thanks Melissa!

We did not give you the gift of life
but in our hearts we know
The love we feel is as deep
as if it had been so

For us to have been brought together
is fate, a dream come true
No, we did not give you the gift of life
Life gave us the gift of you!!!

------------------------------------------

Once there were two women who never knew each other.
One you do not remember, the other is your new mother.

The first gave you life and the second will teach you to live it.
The first gave you a need for love and the second will be there to give it.

One gave you a nationality, the other is giving you a name.
One gave you the seed of talent, the other will give you aim.

One gave you emotions, the other will calm your fears.
One saw your first sweet smile, the other will dry your tears.

One gave you up, it was all that she could do.
The other prayed for a child and God led her straight to you.

And now you ask me through your tears, the age old questions through the years.
Heredity or environment, which are you the product of?

Both, my darling, both.
They're just different kinds of love.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Natural Child: Any child who is not artificial.
Real Parent: Any parent who is not imaginary.
Your Own Child: Any child who is not someone else's child.
Adopted Child: A natural child, with a real parent, who is all our own.

I shared your poems with a family that I have taught that adopted two girls. She wanted me to pass her favorite poem along. Here it is:
Not flesh of my flesh, not bone of my bone but still miraculously my own. Not for a single minute you didn't grow under my heart but in it.

Love,
Jessi
